Explore Caves

Nothing speaks to the spectacular hidden beauty of Margaret River than it’s majestic limestone caves. Part of a vast and 1 million year old underground network of caves in the region, they showcase massive stalagmite and stalactite structures, underground water springs and rivers, treasure troves of precious glittering formations and ancient naturally formed architecture.

A number of the more than 100 strong cave network are open to the public. You can choose to be guided in a gropup, or walk yourself on your own self-guided tour.

Discover Beaches

Long white beaches, turquoise waters and the warm Leeuwin Current that flows south make our waters particularly enjoyable to swim in. While there are many excellent surf breaks there are great swimming beachs – from reef sheltered Prevelly Beach or the bay of Meelup Beach and picnic and bbq area, there are many choices for enjoying the beach. There are many dog friendly beaches as well, although if you want to soak up the splendours of our National Park beaches, you may have to leave your pooch at home!

Find Wildflowers

Wildflower season kicks off in September, the start of spring. Starting with vivid yellows and purples all through the bush, wildflower season quickly blossoms into a true cornucopia of colour, shape and size.

You can spend a whole season just looking for wild, native orchids – of which there are 136 different species of Spider Orchid (Caladenia) alone. Or marvel or at the tremendous diversity of  “Egg and Bacon” pea flowers. The further into spring we go, the greater the abundance and diversity of species on display in the bush. Simply step out onto a bush track and go for a wander – your eyes will be in for a treat truely unique to South Western Australia. With over 8000 wildflower species in South Western Australia, this is truely a unique opportunity.

Try Surfing

Margaret River is a truely iconic surf spot. Going down in world wide surfing history due to the Margaret River Pro, highlighting the peak surf breaks such as Surfers Point and the Box, there are multiple, awesome surf breaks all along the Cape.

Installed in the Bistro Bar we have an awesome, comprehensive map of surf breaks all along the coast. Drop in and plan your surf trip, and check out the surfing memorabilia that marks Settlers Tavern’s record of surfing (and surfing events).

Walking and Hiking

Margaret River is a walking and hiking paradise. The Cape to Cape track is 135km that stretches along the coastline from Cape Naturaliste to Cape Leeuwin. Along the track are such gems as Quinninup Falls (flows in Winter and Spring), a sacred location for the local Wadandi people. Other spectacular scenery includes the rugged coastline, limestone cliffs and caves, bush walks and wildflowers, and that touch of the wild you can only get from walking far into bush where you can only hear and see nature all around.

And there are plenty of other walks – shorter, more managable ones such as the Ten Mile Brook Trail that starts from Rotary Park, right near the bridge in town and the Wadandi track which meanders from Cowaramup to Witchcliffe. Just get out amongst it, you’ll be glad you did!

Mountain biking

Margaret River Mountain Biking has a massive following, and tracks and trails for all levels of ability.

First there is the beginners cruise along the Wadandi Track, which has some excellent natural bush views and a mellow pace.

Then there are the intermediate tracks – 10 Mile Brook and Boranup Forest to name two. These are a bit longer and have some more inclines, but still quite managable.

Then there are the true advanced Mountain Biking downhill tracks. In the pine forests off Carters Road there is a plethora of downhill and climbing tracks, all laid out in clear maps designating their recommended ability level and time to complete. These can be ridden at anytime.

Finally there are the events:

  • Cape to Cape Mountain Biking Race, Australasia’s biggest MTB multi-stage endurance race with over 1300 competitors. Settlers Tavern are proud sponsers of Cape to Cape.
  • Seven, with ascents approaching gradients of 20% or more and white knuckle brake smoking decents, this race is set to become one of the most challenging one day races in Australia.

Many visitors to the region don’t really experience the true grandeur, history or ecological diversity of the remarkable South West.
The Margaret River Discovery Company offers personalised tours, hosted by expert local guide Sean Blocksidge and his luxury 4WD on a wine and scenic tour that takes you behind the tourist facade, away from the masses to discover people and places you won’t find on your own.

Our aim is to give you the most memorable wine touring experience you’ll ever have and, in the process, really experience the richness and diversity of this unique corner of the world.

The best way to describe the touring is experiential. Instead of seeing the world through a tinted hire car window we’ll go places and do things so you don’t just see Margaret River – you live it.

Walk Talk Taste Tours

Margaret River is a truly world-class food destination. Saturday’s Farmer’s Market and the Gourmet Escape international food and wine event are part of the joy of living here.

I wanted to deliver that same sense of discovery and locality for the thousands who visit Margaret River every week in one very simple, town-based walking food tour.

For me, Walk Talk Taste had to embody everything I’d enjoyed in my own world travels: a warm and genuine welcome, regional gourmet specialties, depth of local knowledge, new friends and plenty of fun. In short, an authentic, high-value experience.

Farmer’s Market

The Margaret River Farmers’ Market was awarded the 2018 Delicious Awards Most Outstanding Farmers’ Market in Australia. Established in 2002, Margaret River Farmers’ Market has been working hard at bringing fresh seasonal food directly from farmers and producers to the community.

The Margaret River Farmers’ Market has real farmers predominantly from the Margaret River Region (and just beyond, a specific appellation within the southwest) selling seasonal fresh farm produce and artisan food producers selling food they’ve produced directly to consumers. Our stallholders must be personally hands on in the production of the food they sell at the market; no reselling is allowed.
